Dawn Redwood

These decidious conifers grow to 100 feet with a conical shape. In appearance, they are similar to the Coast Redwood, except with a lighter shade of green. First discovered in 1945 after being thought to be extinct. Dawn Redwoods are also known as the dinosaur tree because of fossilized remains found in the age of dinosaurs. They are native to China, but now widely distributed. A very fast grower, they also require quite a bit of water, especially when younger. Dawn Redwoods do not like hot climates without ample water. They have a dark gray, fissured bark. They produce small, globuse cones with 5-6 seeds.
