Italian Stone Pine
These trees grow to 45-75 feet with a broadly arched, umbrella shaped crown. They are native throughout the Mediterranean region and grow fast. They make an excellent shade tree with the wide crown. The Italian Stone Pine adapts well to a dry climate and is a hardy, disease resistant tree. Of particular note, they do not seem to be susceptible to many of the Monterey Pine dieases currently plaguing California.
Needles have long, silvery-green tips. Older trees have a reddish to yellow-brown deep longitudinal fissures in the bark. They have light-yellow brown solitary cones.
